Medicare Part D--Finally Prescriptions for Seniors

Medicare supplement plans really don't have prescription drug benefits and neither do Medicare Part A or Part B. This was a problem for many Seniors until the creation of Medicare Part D in 2006. Medicare Part D is a stand alone Medicare prescription drug plan. A very important--and somewhat confusing---aspect of Medicare Part D is the the Coverage Gap, or "Donut Hole". Here's how it works:

The first $2,510 spent on prescriptions by YOU AND THE PLAN falls under standard copay, generic and brand rules.

Once you reach the $2,510 mark, you are in the gap or donut hole. You are in the gap until your TOTAL out of pocket expenses reach $4,050. While you are in the gap, you have access to discounted drugs, but no copays.

After the $4,050 mark is reached, you are in the Catastophic Coverage phase and extremely low copays apply again.

Here's what a lot of people miss: While you are in the gap, your out of pocket from the first $2,510 counts toward the $4,050 out of pocket total to get you out of the gap.
